How to Take a Nature Hike

Taking nature hikes is a lot of fun. No matter where you live, there is probably someplace nearby where you can enjoy nature. Even if you live in a city, you can find someplace within easy distance where you can enjoy natur-on way.  You will also feel refreshed and ready for more adventures after your first nature hike.

Step one in planning your nature hike is deciding where to go. You will also need to get an adult family member or friend to go along with you. It's best to involve the people you want to bring in the planning process. Together you can learn about all the different types of habitats in your area and decide which one you want to explore first. You should choose a place fairly close by. This will give you more time to enjoy the place and cut down on travel time.

Once you have chosen your location, it's a great idea to spend some time learning about the plants and animals that live in that habitat. If you have an idea of what you will be looking at, you will have more fun finding and identifying things that you recognize. For example, if you go to the beach, you can have fun finding shells and types of seaweed that you recognize. Or, if you go to the forest, you can find trees and plants that you know.  If you are lucky, you might even spot animals and birds.

If you really want to make a full adventure of your nature hike, you could put together a little book of plants and animals that you might find on your trip. Creating a book like this will help you remember the plants and animals that you see. You can get all of your friends and family involved in learning about the creatures before you go and in spotting them once you get there.

Before you go on a nature hike you also need to have the proper outerwear and gear. You'll need to make sure that you wear good hiking shoes or tennis shoes. You don't want to get blisters on your feet or be uncomfortable while you are hiking. If you expect rain, make sure that you have rain gear. If it will be sunny, bring a hat and sunscreen. If you expect bugs, bring bug spray. Being prepared will make your nature hike much more fun.

You will also want to bring a pack with snacks for everyone. As you are hiking, you need to keep up your energy, so bring good foods like trail mix, fruit, and granola bars. You can also bring lunch if you are planning on going for a day hike. It is also very important to bring water for everyone in your hiking party. Water is one of the most important things you can bring.

After you are ready to go and have everything you need for your trip, go out and have fun! Nature hikes are a great way to spend time with people you like, spend time outside, and learn all sorts of new and interesting facts about the place where you live.
