 As she stood atop Colorado Springs’ Pikes Peak and looked out over the vast expanse, poet Katharine Lee Bates was overcome by the beauty she witnessed and felt inspired to write about "spacious skies," "amber waves of grain," and "purple mountain majesties." Her poem, "America The Beautiful," was later paired with music and today is sung in classrooms and meeting halls across the United States.
