CAPITAL / RIVER

The Natchez tribe thrived in the loamy hills of southwestern Mississippi. When Europeans arrived, they built grand antebellum mansions, many of which are now open for public tours. The magnificent grandeur of these homes attests to the fact that before the war, more than half the millionaires in the nation lived in this region. For natural wonders, look for kestrels and screech owls in the Homochitto National Forest, try bass fishing at Natchez State Park, or visit the wooded hills of Vicksburg National Military Park.
