| | Seas of grass cover the Sand Hills region. This is a perfect place to watch for prairie chickens, sharp-tailed grouse, deer, ducks, and coyotes. Look for bluebirds along the Elkhorn River at Atkinson Lake, or waterbirds and prairie dogs at Valentine National Wildlife Refuge.
