New York City is a world unto itself. Travelers can easily spend a week or more exploring its treasures without feeling the need to leave Manhattan, let alone set foot in the other four boroughs (Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island). The land outside the city is equally wondrous, however. Try dipping your toes at Fire Island, or watch for young ospreys in Shelter Island’s tidal creeks and coastline.
