Sugar Cookie Recipe (makes about 2 dozen cookies)

You will need:
21/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup butter
1 tsp vanilla
2 eggs

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Mix together the butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla. In a separate bowl mix dry ingredients, flour and baking powder. Blend wet and dry ingredients thoroughly. Cover and chill the dough for at least an hour before rolling, it is better to chill it for three to four hours.

On a lightly floured pastry cloth, roll the dough to an 1/8 inch thick using a rolling pin. Cut into the desired shapes. You can repeat the process with the scraps until all of the dough is used, but be sure not to use too much flour during the rolling process. You only need just enough to keep the dough from sticking. Place cookies on an ungreased baking sheet and bake for 6 to 10 minutes or until just light brown.

Icing Recipe (for about 2 dozen cookies)

You will need:
2 tbsp milk
1 cup powdered sugar, sifted
2-3 drops food coloring (optional)
2-3 drops flavored extracts, vanilla, peppermint, almond (optional)

Start by stirring half of the milk into the powdered sugar with a whisk to make the icing. If the icing is not the desired consistency slowly add small amounts of milk until the icing is ideal. Next divide the icing into portions appropriate for the colors and flavors you wish to make. Stir in flavoring and food coloring one drop at a time until the icing is the correct color and flavor.

Fill small pastry bags with icing for decorating. You can use just one pastry bag for piping the icing onto the cookies, but they are difficult to clean if you want to switch colors, so having multiples is ideal. You will also want to have smooth icing knives to spread the icing over the cookie smoothly.
