Minnesota
Star of the North
Visit Minnesota for its woods, its farmland, and its more than 10,000 lakes. If you like to fish, you can hardly leave the northwoods without catching walleye - the northern stretches are renowned fishing hot spots. Birders and wildlife viewers will find plenty to see, from moose and black bears, to eagles, hawks, and songbirds. Watch for timber wolves in the north, beavers and muskrat in the wetlands of the south, and coyote and fox along the roadsides.
Farms define the southern regions of the state. You'll see corn and soybeans, livestock and dairy cows. Along the eastern side, the Mississippi and St. Croix (pronounced St. Croy) Rivers have carved steep limestone bluffs, leaving curious geologic formations. You'll find the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul where the Minnesota River joins the Mississippi.

Further north, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and Voyageurs National Park both beg to be explored by canoe. Slip your keel into Lake Superior, or aim farther north to the Lake of the Woods. At nearby Lake Itasca, you'll find the headwaters of the Mississippi, North America's longest river (2,350 miles).
